Fillings

What is Tooth Filling?

It is process in cosmetic and restorative dentistry where substances like metal, porcelain or composite resin are placed into decayed or broken teeth to reinstate the original state and function of the tooth.

There are direct fillings where a tooth colored resin like material is directly placed into the tooth once all of the decay is removed. An adhesive agent is used to bond the material to the tooth and a light is used to help harden the material to help adapt it to the natural tooth structure.

There are also two types of indirect tooth filling: Inlays and Onlays. In inlays the center of the tooth is filled whereas in onlays the entire outer decayed surface can be filled to prevent further decay.

Generally, a tooth filling procedure is done to prevent the tooth from any more decay, as the bacteria are removed and then the surface is closed by filling. This stops the development of any cavity or decay at and around that place.
