Teeth Whitening

While you can use OTC teeth whitening products, they will not offer the results that professional teeth whitening provides. We, at Western Piedmont Dental, ensure you get the best possible results that are long-lasting.

Our teeth whitening process removes stains from the surface of your teeth so that the natural color of your teeth is visible. It is considered a cosmetic process and hence, it will not be covered by your dental insurance. Nonetheless, you should not hesitate to visit our dental practice and get your teeth cleaned and whitened once a year. It will not only give your smile a makeover but also restore your confidence. We use the latest dental technology that enables us to use advanced teeth whitening procedures that give long-lasting and definitive results.

Why Do Teeth Get Discolored?

There are several reasons for teeth to get discolored and change from sparkling white to yellow or brownish color. Some of these reasons are as follows:

Food and Drink

The main culprits for discoloring and staining teeth are tea, coffee, and red white. These beverages have a pigment known as chromogen and this attached to the enamel of the teeth, resulting in stains.

Tobacco

Tar and nicotine found in tobacco result in hard-get-rid-of stains. Tar is dark in color and discolors teeth. Nicotine, on the other hand, causes the teeth to get a yellowish tinge.

Age

As you age, the outer white layer of the teeth known as the enamel gets thinner. As a result, the inner layer, which is known as dentin becomes more visible. Dentin is yellowish and as a result, older people’s teeth appear yellowish.

Trauma

If you injure your mouth, your affected teeth may change color as it reacts to the injury. When teeth get injured, more dentin is produced and this can lead to the teeth looking yellower than before.

Medication

Certain medications can cause teeth to discolor. Antihistamines, high blood pressure medications, and antipsychotics are medications that lead to discoloration. Chemotherapy and radiation to the neck and head can also lead to the darkening of the teeth. If young children are given certain antibiotics like doxycycline and tetracycline, they can result in discoloration of teeth in adulthood.

Our Teeth Whitening Process

When you visit Western Piedmont Dental, the dentist will first click photographs of your teeth to show you before and after results. It also enables them to examine your teeth to figure out the precise location of the stains.

The dentist will also examine your teeth to ensure you do not have any other dental problems. If they find a problem, they will address that first before whitening your teeth. It is necessary to clean the teeth to get rid of any debris and food particles stuck on the surface. Once this is done, the dentist will begin the whitening process. It will take around 30 to 90 minutes based on how severe the stains are.

We protect the gums before applying the whitening agent to your teeth. Some of the agents may require laser lights. If the stains are bad, the dentist will create a customized mouthpiece for you so that you can continue the whitening process at home for a couple of days.
